In recent years, teachers and students have become increasingly aware of the challeges and importance of Chinese language learning. However, no matter how convinced learners are in principle of the importance of grammar, it is difficult for them to put these principles into practice without the benefit of an up-to-date, accessible and learner-oriented grammar textbook. We at Northeast Normal University are determined to provide just such a book, one that we feel best meets the needs of both students and teachers.
The grammar rules in this book are selected from the syllabus of the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK). As we know, the traditional method of teaching grammar was to present “rules” simply by means of verbal description, but it has become clear that this approach to language-learning is highly ineffective. In this book, therefore, a more vivid and direct pattern is presented, and a new method which aims to explain grammar by the use of abundant pictures. Teachers are saved the trouble of setting the context verbally, and thus the new method makes teaching more convenient, efficient and interesting. Moreover, it helps to create a more relaxed learning environment, and it stimulates the enthusiasm to learn. Meanwhile, a variety of exercises and keys also makes it possible for students to study independently.
This book can be used with the textbook for the Chinese Comprehensive Course to form a complete system. When referring to a particular grammar point, both teachers and students can consult this book to learn and then drill. A more detailed instruction as to the usage of each part of the book is provided in the following section.
It is our hope that this textbook will provide you with invaluable assistance in expressing your ideas using secure grammar and flexible, idiomatic Chinese.
1. Pictorial illustration and explanation of grammar rules
Basic grammar patterns are firstly shown verbally, and are then illustrated and explained by pictures. Sample sentences follow the pictures to give further help.
Particularly close attention should be paid to this section, since it identifies difficult areas where students might easily make mistakes in their use of grammar.
3. Oral practice
Oral practice, which is also illustrated in detail, aims to improve the students’ use of Chinese, and to describe pictures by using the grammar rules they have just learned.
4. Comprehensive exercises
Comprehensive exercises includes sentence-making (a process which is based on pictures), gap-filling, proofreading, and sentence-formation by using a range of possible alternative words. Through these tasks, the students will gain substantial experience of applying their newly-learned grammar in practical usage and contexts.
5. Key to the exercises
Provided at the end of the book are the keys to the exercises, to be used only for reference. One or more possible answers are provided. …
