Words from the Editor

This dictionary is entitled “A Learner’s Dictionary of Idioms” because it includes potential set phrases, idioms, proverbs, sayings and other phrases in various categories that foreign learners of Chinese may come across in learning.
Its target readers are foreign learners with intermediate or advanced level of Chinese. Moreover, it is also suitable for overseas Chinese people or their descendants who whish to learn Chinese as well as people of minor nationalities in China.
Generally speaking, chances for foreign learners to meet idioms increases as they enter into their intermediate or advanced stage of Chinese learning. The humorous, vivid and visualized effect of these idioms can greatly enhance their motivation for Chinese learning. However, learners are confronted with some difficulties in understanding and using these idioms because some of them are loaded with unique cultural connotations of Han nationality, some have undergone semantic transformations, some are characterized by their unique structures – some can be used as an integral whole while others can be used with other elements in between. Surveys show that many foreign learners complain about the lack of tools for learning Chinese idioms – with only a sketchy knowledge of idioms that arise in reading, they turn to dictionaries only to find that they fail to understand the explanations clearly because such dictionaries are compiled for the readership of native Chinese speakers. Consequently they are still unable to grasp the meanings and usages of these idioms. Therefore they look forward to a dictionary of idioms that are suited to their needs. This dictionary is thus compiled for that purpose. During the process of compilation, we have distributed the design and samples among intermediate and advanced Chinese learners to collect their opinions and make adjustments accordingly.
Some idioms that are included may appear in various Chinese textbooks and supplementary reading materials for foreign learners, some may arise while learners communicate with native Chinese speakers, and some are must-know idioms for foreign learners because they are frequently used in the verbal communication of Chinese people. Therefore these idioms will expectedly fulfill the actual needs of foreign students in learning and communication in China.
Moreover, to make this dictionary a real help to foreign learners, we have analyzed the Chinese level of proficiency, intuition and receptivity of foreign learners and made tentatively efforts to give detailed notes to idioms by the principle of laying stress on both meaning and usage and help them understand and use them correctly. Such efforts are embodied in the following aspects:

First, we have basically adopted the approach of paraphrase or explanation to semantic notes and avoided explaining with synonyms or highly concentrated explanations. Moreover, by explaining the formation of some idioms or providing background information or other additional explanations, we seek to reveal the transition of each sense from its literal meaning to the connotative meaning. Direct explanation of the connotative meaning is restricted only to a small portion of idioms. For instance, if
hóng de fā zǐ 红得发紫
qiān niú yào qiān niúbízi 牵牛要牵牛鼻子
tiān xiǎo de 天晓得
are directly paraphrased as
“it figuratively means being extremely powerful or favored by the superior“;
„it figuratively means that we should grasp the essence of a problem if we want to tackle it“;
„heaven knows it“,
foreign learners will probably fail to understand their actual connotations. Therefore we offer the following notes:
hóng de fā zǐ 红得发紫: There are nine official ranks in ancient Chinese court, the first being the highest rank while the ninth the lowest. Officials with different ranks wear uniforms in different colors. Officials rank higher than the third grade wear purple uniforms while those holding the fourth or the fifth ranks wear in red. Therefore, hong de fa zi was used in the past to refer to officials who kept being promoted. In modern usage, it refers to a person with a great power or with his/her superior’s biased favour and unlimited trust. In addition, it refers to the people who become famous and popular, especially the entertaining and sports stars. Derogatory when referring to the person with a power or with his/her superior’s biased favour and unlimited trust. It sometimes means that the good fortune peaked and the decline is not far away.
qiān niú yào qiān niúbízi 牵牛要牵牛鼻子: Nose is the most sensitive part of an ox. By piercing a ring into its nose and tying it with a lace, one can easily harness the ox. This phrase means that one must identify and tackle the key part first in handling a matter.
tiān xiǎo de 天晓得 : Tian refers to the Heavenly Emperor in the traditional Chinese mythology. The phrase means that only the Heavenly Emperor (or God) knows or understands. It is used to show that someone finds something inexplicable or unpredictable or that he has been wronged but cannot defend himself. It is also used as an exclamation.

 Secondly, this dictionary gives special emphasis to providing all information that is related to the context of the idiom : the environment or situation of the idiom, the user’s mood and the listener’s potential reaction, the affective meaning, the trend of collocation, regular collocation, collocation of separation and reunion, and some special forms of negation, etc.
….
Thirdly, all the three example sentences to each sense are selected from contemporary publications, though necessary adaptations have been made to some of them to suit the receptivity of foreign readers. These example sentences are not only useful in actual communication but also reflect the use of idioms in real discourse. Though varying from simple sentences to complex sentences, the example sentences are complete in meaning and self-sufficient in structure to show the actual context and conditions of the idioms. In addition, the common structure model at the end of each entry can supplement the inadequacy of example sentence patterns.
Fourthly, foreign learners dread Chinese characters so much that many of them are not accustomed to using dictionaries with Chinese explanation even after they reach the advanced stage of learning. This is certainly contrary to our expectations, but as an expedient, we still provide semantic, grammatical and pragmatic notes in both Chinese and English, and add pinyin behind the example sentences and collocational models. It is expected that such an expedient will help foreign learners to use dictionaries with Chinese explanations and in the meantime provides convenience to foreign learners with a limited stock of Chinese characters or having difficulty in reading them.
