Items description:

This is represents the third cooperation between the two previously published British
authors on China-related subjects, foUowing on China's Third Revolution (2000 and
Green China (2oo2), both published in Britain.Green China, as well as this particular work, developed from a recognition that China was tackling a wide range of serious environmental problems within the context of her rapid industrialization, urbanization, transition to a market-oriented economy and growing consumerism that would inevitably have great impact not only on the lives of its own vast population, but also for those inhabiting neighboring countries and even the world at large.
The problems have been well documented in the Western media, but the solutions being
tried have perhaps not been so well publicized, and this book is an attempt to redress the
The previous work was written with the academic community predominantly in mind,
and therefore dealt with each aspect of various environmentally related issues in considerable depth, with detailed referencing. This, it was recognized, might not appeal to a more general readership, and so the authors have produced an entirely new work, drawing on their wide research but written in a much simpler, somewhat less technical form. Referencing (either within the text or as footnotes/chapter end notes) is normally considered necessary to establish the bona fides of the material being presented in academic works.
Readers will find less detailed sourcing in this book, but each chapter concludes with a
sources and resources' section that identifies the main contributors, as well as suggesting
books or Internet sites for the reader wishing to know more about specific aspects.
The work has been broken up into six sections. After a general overview, the following three chapters deal with the history of environmental problems from ancient times through to the creation of the People's Republic of China in x949 when the nation embarked on an ambitious program of heavy industrialization and various projects designed to tame a somewhat unruly Nature. There are then four sections, each preceded by a brief introductory overview, that deal with the key issues related to air pollution, water pollution, wastdisposal and reclaiming lost land (desert and alkaline land) through reforestation and safeguarding rare flora and fauna through the establishment of nature reserves and biosphere zones. This leads on to the final section where two future scenarios (one bleak, the other optimistic) are considered, along with suggestions for what China will have to do in order to win the battle against ecological and environmental degradation in the interests of
future generations.
Some readers might consider the title overly optimistic, given the long and arduous road that China must travel in order to overcome the environmental degradation obvious in so many parts of the country Nevertheless, it does reflect the aspirations of the people
quoted in this book and provides the essential motivation for the policies now emerging
from governments at all levels, and the experiments being undertaken, to tackle the many and diverse problems of environmental pollution throughout China, and that is why it was chosen to offer a ray of hope.
