Step by Step, Phase 2 takes vocabulary introduced in Phase 1 as its foundation and provides additional reading practice for young Chinese-language learners at the second grade level. Phase 2 consists of 31 readers in simplified characters along with an audio CD featuring recordings of all 31 books.
All readers in this standards-based series relate to topics integral to K–2 curricula: family, school, community, plants and seeds, water and weather, nutrition, hygiene, physical activity, school, math, and time. This correlation allows students to connect the material with content from other classes, reinforcing both their Chinese reading comprehension skills and their knowledge of the subject matter.
Consistent with identified best practices for language learning, the series emphasizes learning Chinese through relevant content supported by vivid narratives and delightful visuals. In addition, the readers emphasize common oral language structures and repeated use of high-frequency words, familiarizing students with natural Chinese speech.
Within the Step by Step series, vocabulary builds incrementally and systematically. The first three readers introduce 24 essential vocabulary items. All other readers build from this foundation, adding approximately eight new vocabulary items per book. Vocabulary acquisition spirals through each topic, giving students opportunities to encounter words in multiple meaningful contexts. How does Step by Step work?
The key to Step by Step’s unique organization lies in its spiraled vocabulary and theme-based approach. This multi-level series starts with three Foundation stories in Level A, which introduce 35 essential vocabulary terms. Once students have mastered the vocabulary in the Foundation stories, teachers can introduce any of the 10 cross-curricular themes—family, hygiene, nutrition, activity, plants, school, water, community, time, and math— to reinforce content learned in other subject areas and provide familiar and engaging language learning contexts. There are three readers in each theme, and each reader introduces approximately 8–12 new high frequency vocabulary terms while systematically recycling previously learned vocabulary. The non-linear relationship among themes allows you to design your language curriculum to match the curriculum in other subject areas and to introduce as many or as few themes as suits your program.
