Ni Tsan, style name Yuan-chen, sobriquets Yün-lin and Yu-weng, was a native o Wu-his, Kiangsu. The son of a wealthy merchant, he was a bibliophile, collector, amateur poet, and painter. He remained aloof from any official commitment and spent the later part of his life wandering among the streams and lakes of his native province.
The subject matter of Ni Tsan’s paintings consists of a river with mountains on both banks, one pavilion and several trees. All of his paintings can be reduced to these same elements, but the subtlety within his sparse and restrained style gives way to a timeless chasteness and delicacy. In this refined elegance that has been styled “bland” there is depth and flavour. In this painting, the washes dominate the hemp fiber modelling strokes that lend texture to the mountains. There is a pervasive sense of weighty antiquity to the whole composition. The brushwork of the bamboo possesses a particularly tensile energy.

倪瓚（1301~1374AD），江蘇無錫人，字元鎮，號雲林。性清介俊爽，雅厚敦行，工詩善書畫，精擅山水竹石，為元四大家之一。其書植基於歐陽詢，得其瘦勁，更上追鍾繇，以求古拙，復參以二王筆法，遂於古拙中含妍妙，故書史稱其書古而媚，密而疏。
