Vernal Dawn at the Peach Blossom Spring

Wang Meng, one of the “Four Masters of the Yuan”, was a maternal grandson of the famous artist Chang Meng-fu (1254-1322). A native of Wu-hsing (present-day Huchou, Chekiang), he was styled Shu-ming and went under the sobriquet Woodcutter of Yellow Crane Mountain; he called himself Recluse of Fragrant light. Wang’s painting style is heavily indebted to Wang Wei (701-761), Tung Yuan (d. 962), and Chu-jan (fl. Ca. 960-980), but his brushwork is looser and reveals a wide range of expression. He excelled at using “dry” ink to paint texture strokes as well as to limn the dots of “moss” that are used to model the shapes of mountains. His compositions are full and complex yet sacrifice nothing in terms of spaciousness.
This scroll depicts a scene from T’ao Yuan-ming’s “Peach Blossom Spring”; in the light of a spring dawn a fisherman punts his boat along a stream. Surrounding him on both banks are delicate masses of blossoming peach trees towered over by a stand pines; precipitous mountains sprinkled with “moss” dots rise into the distance.
