Guiseppe Castiglione (1688-1766), Ch’ing Dynasty
(Hanging scroll, color and ink on silk, 139.3 x 80.2 cm)

Guiseppe Castiglione, called Lang Shin-ning in Chinese, was a native of Milan, Italy. When he became a Jesuit at the age of nineteen, he already excelled at painting and architecture. At twenty-seven, he journeyed to China as a missionary and was summoned to the Imperial Court, where he served under the K’ang-his, Yung-cheng and Ch’ien-lung emperors. He is known for his paintings of dogs and horses.
This work is a painting from life, depicting the fine horses in this composition are painted with Western brushwork and colors, reflecting Castiglione’s initial training in Italy. Although undated, the painting must be early, dating from the reign of the Yung-cheng Emperor (1723-1735).
