This is the fourth book of the Graded Chinese Reader series tailoring for foreigner Chinese language learners at new HSK Level 2 & 3 or above. The book can both serve as a Chinese reading textbook and also an after-school extensive reading material. It includes 15 award-winning mini-stories from China. The book has the following features:
1.Abridged versions of mini-stories written by contemporary Chinese writers, reflecting the everyday lives of ordinary Chinese people;
2.The vocabulary in this book consists of 500 essential Chinese words, which are mainly chosen based on the first 500 Chinese words of the 1,500 high frequency words in the International Curriculum for Chinese Language Education (2008). The book also includes some of the 600 Chinese words of the Chinese Proficiency Test Syllabus Level 3 (2009). The 500 high frequency words along with some new HSK Level 3 words that appear in the book are all included in the glossary;
3.Commonly used words appear in high frequency to form concise and short sentences with complete structure;
4.Pinyin is added to the complete text, English notes or sample sentences for difficult words and sentences are provided;
The same side note may appear again in the following articles to facilitate readers who want to choose an article of interest from those offered .
5.Guide to Reading and About the Author in English, and Questions in Chinese are
provided for each story;
6.Accompanied by original illustrations and a CD in MP3 format.


Preface:

It is an established fact that reading practice is effective in improving one`s proficiency in a foreign language. Thus, for students of Chinese as a foreign language, learning how to read Chinese is essential to the process of becoming familiar with Chinese words. To become effectively literate, students need to have a command of about 3,000 to 5,000 Chinese words. However, mastering such a large amount of Chinese vocabulary can be quite a significant burden. But students are eager to read in Chinese even with a limited amount of vocabulary. I once taught in the Chinese Department of Venice University and found that the students needed simple reading materials that have been specifically designed for students of Chinese as a foreign language with the main purpose of helping them improve their reading comprehension. This series can be useful both inside and outside the classroom.
Readability and language practibility are characteristics of the simplified stories in this series, based on contemporary Chinese novels, some of which are prize-winning works. The stories all describe Chinese people`s lives and the various social changes that have occurred since the 1980s in China. By reading these literary works, written by important contemporary Chinese writers, students of Chinese as a foreign language can gain a better knowledge of the everyday lives of the Chinese people. In order toe help readers have a better comprehension of these works, each story has a “Guide to reading”, which appears before the main text. Questions based on the story and a brief introduction to the author are also included in the stories.

Graded Chinese Reader 500 Words is the fourth book of the series. The stories in Graded Chinese Reader 500 Words have been selected from a range of contemporary mini-stories. The vocabulary in Graded Chinese Reader 500 Words consists of 500 essential Chinese words, which were mainly chosen based on the first 500 Chinese words of the 1,500 high frequency words in the International Curriculum for Chinese Language Education (2008). The book also includes some of the 600 Chinese words of the Chinese Proficiency Test Syllabus Level 3 (2009). In each story, words outside of these above mentioned categories, such as more advanced words, proper nouns, idioms and complex sentence words, are explained in notes included at the side of each page along with examples of some of the commonly used words. Plus, words that are beyond the 500 yet within the category of 600 Chinese words of the Chinese Proficiency Test Syllabus Level 3 are marked. To make it easier for readers to look up the vocabulary, the 500 high frequency words and those belong to the New HSK Test Level 3 which have appeared in this book are listed in the glossary.
In Graded Chinese Reader 500 Words, the most common words appear frequently in the text so that students can memorize them more efficiently; the sentences are reasonably short; complex sentences are avoided; pinyin is used so that students can easily master each word`s pronunciation and look it up in a dictionary. Each story has its own notes so that readers may choose whichever story they wish to read. In order to improve students` listening comprehension, a CD in MP3 format is attached to the book. In addition, the stories are illustrated with pictures, which will help students gain a better understanding. The main goal of Graded Chinese Reader is to further reduce the difficulty of reading Chinese for students and improve their reading and listening ability.

About the author:

Shi Ji is a professor of Chinese language at the Chinese Teaching Center of Southwest Jiaotong University. She has been engaged in teaching Chinese language courses since 1996, including those at Venice University in Italy from November 2004 to November 2006. As an experienced teacher of Chinese as a second language, she has published a dozen articles in this field.

《汉语分级阅读•500词》的故事选自中国当代微型小说。这些故事描写了自20世纪80年代至今的中国人的生活和中国社会发生的各种变化。《汉语分级阅读•500词》词汇量限定在500汉语常用词,主要根据《国际汉语教学通用课程大纲》(2008)1,500高频词的前500个高频词进行编写,同时参照了《新汉语水平考试大纲》(2009)HSK三级限定的600词。对每篇故事中超出上述词汇以外的词、难词、专有名词、俗语及难句,编者均进行了旁注,一些常用词给出了例句。对不在500词内但包含在新HSK三级限定的600词范围内的词,做了特殊标记(如比赛)。为方便读者查阅词汇,《汉语分级阅读•500词》后附有500个高频词及书中用到的新HSK三级词汇之总词汇表。

《汉语分级阅读•500词》在编写过程中尽量增加常用词的复现率,以此增强读者对汉语常用词的理解与记忆。句子力求简短,结构完整,尽量避免结构复杂的长句。故事正文均配上拼音,使学生尽可能地通过读音记忆词义和查阅词典。为方便读者能够按自己的兴趣任意挑选某篇故事去阅读,注释都是以单篇故事为单位重复出现的。为提高学生的听力水平,《汉语分级阅读•500词》配有MP3格式的CD光盘。除此之外,每篇故事还配有插图,以帮助学生更直观地了解故事内容。《汉语分级阅读•500词》编写的宗旨是进一步降低汉语阅读的难度,提高汉语阅读和汉语听力的水平。
