For quite a long time a region has been looming up in our mind's eye. The place witnesses a land with an emergence of genii and rich produces, telling not only a fast development of industry and agriculture and a sudden burst of newly booming technology but also a striding forward in tourism, culture and education that are ranked at the forefront of the country. What is the region.* It is a region making us to think of and feel throbbing in daytime and even in dream as well. The very region is Jiangsu--our lovable hometown. Jiangsu, should we say the Yangtze River be a huge dragon, Shanghai being the head of the dragon, is the very body of it, the heart of the Yangtze River economic belt, the lifeline, the source of motive force and the reliance of vigor
and go for it. For many years we've been nursing in this regard an idea if we can put the famous tourist sites and attractions into a bilingual book in Chinese and English and bring it out in a somewhat detailed way to tourists domestic and foreign that will be a matter of no small significance. Because, it can not only serve to raise the awareness of the Jiangsu tourism both inside and outside China, especially the areas in the north of Jiangsu where the development of tourism industry is relatively slow but also prove useful for the colleagues of ours. It can help increase the knowledge in both Chinese and English, help raise the level of education and training of tour-guides and related persons. The book is a must for them, a quite readable one for reference and enlightenment as well. In themeanwhile it is also a book of quite some interests for tourists to Jiangsu from home and abroad.
Today our efforts have come to a fruitful result. With the great assistance of "China Travel and Tourism Press" a book entitled Serial Guidebooks of Tourist Attractions in China-Guide to Jiangsu is about to see the light. For this we feel very much pleased, for the publication of the book has realized our long cherished wishes, that we can contribute in some small way to the development of tourism industry of Jiangsu and express gratitude to our native place.
At last, we would like to make it clear that in the course of our translation and compilation we've referred in part to the travel materials worked out in Chinese by the CITS Head Office, and pieced them together and put into English. For this we would like to express out sincere and heartfelt thanks to the colleagues who've made painstaking efforts in the compilation of the materials in Chinese.
