Description

Chinese literature is filled with narratives that can be classified as fables. These stories were written by philosophers, historians, prose writers and many of them were used to illustrate the writer's arguments. Chinese fables are presented with human and animal protagonists and have often served to enrich the Chinese language.
This book selects 100 fables from many literary and historical classics during the pre-Qin era and the Han Dynasty. Chronologically arranged, they include myths such as “The Stubborn Fellow Removing the Mountain”, “Kua Fu Chasing the Sun”, idiomatic stories such as “Self-contradiction”, “Fox and Tiger”, and humor stories such as “Joke by a Countryman”, “A man from Zheng buying Shoes”, and philosophical writings such as “Duke Lu Raising a Horse”, “The Utensil on the Right Side”, etc. Every fable comprises the original, annotations, modern Chinese pronunciation and rendition, and English translation.


About the translators

K. L. Kiu is a lecturer in the Department of Chinese at Hong Kong University where she has taught Chinese/English translation since 1972. Her publications include Tonal rules for English Loan Words in Cantonese, On some phonetic characteristics of the Cantonese subdialect spoken by the boat people from Pu Tai island, On the Translation of Puns – A Study of the Chinese Translations of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Her Name is Woman (Chinese edition).
