Foreword for Preediting the Book
Acupuncture-moxibustion, as one treasure of traditional Chinese Medicine system, whose essence lies behind regard for manipulation and operation technique. It is said that Hua Tuo, taken as the morale-working doctor incarnate in Chinese ancient times, was a great master of acupuncture-moxibuston with highly skilful needling and moxibustion techniques, who attained perfection in applying needling craft in clinics, and , as being able to control a patient'sneedling sensation and move a patient'smeridian-qi at his will even with a few points selected at each treatment time, he usually made diseases relieved after his therapy. There existed too numerous to mention such highly skilled doctor during the long Chinese successive dynasties. Because of the limitations of historical condition, mastering acupuncture-moxibustion technics and skills, is the result that an individual clinically learns, practices, experiences, and tries to fathom them over and over again for a long term.
As each manipulation method of acupuncture-moxibustion has its own character, rich in creation, and difficult to be separated from its operator for the purpose of making it standardized beyond time and space. The most possible way of learning and grasping it is face-to-face teaching and studying between a master and his or her students. Based on the stated above it is necessary to gets rid of the traditional way of recording, describing and collating acupuncture-moxibuston only with text processing, and we should replaced it with a new way of using both text processing and illustrations, in order to make full expression of the manipulation skills of Chinese acupuncture and moxibustion which are rich in distinctive features, and to be easy for learners.
In addition to seeking for a new way adding a lot of figures of acupuncture-moxibustion skills in the written language expression, one other problem is to built a different method for researching and systematizing the acupuncture and moxibustion technique. With the establishment of the system, we plotted the construction of this book and tried to divide it to upper and lower chapter. In this book, as for the categorized skill and technique, it pays not only traditional acupuncture-moxibustion classical technique, but collection of part well-known doctor'sskill and technique; to the clinic skills which is applied to treatment of a concrete disease according to the conditions of the disease and patient.
Additionally, as considering that Chinese acupuncture and moxibustion are spreading to all over the world, we compile this book in bilingual form, i.e. in Chinese and English languages, and use the original complex forms of the Chinese Characters in this book instead of their simplified forms in order to meet the needs of people in and out of China of learning and grasping Chinese acupuncture-moxibustion techniques. It is deeply hoped that this idea can be helpful to international academic exchange of acupuncture and moxibustion.
Skills with illustrations of Chinese acupuncture and moxibustion has been welcome by the readers in both foreign countries and China since the publication of the fist edition in 1992. It lasts 13 years so far, the original edition has already been taken off and sold. It is necessary to reedit the book now in order to satisfy the demand of the readers in the world. Because of the developing at full speed of science and technology, the weak point of this book will be unavoidable to appear. It is advisable to revise further and cooperate with electronic edition, then put it to be published, thus to be more consummate book.
