In the preface to our Reality Chinese: A Multi-skill Chinese Course fro Intermediate and Advanced Students published in 2006, we made this statement: “Having taught Chinese in the United States for many years, we were fully aware of the deficiency of the audio-video teaching materials that could help acquaint the students to the contemporary Chinese society through authentic and living language. Precisely because of that, we have compiled this textbook.” Still for the same reason, we are now offering this volume of Scenario Chinese: A Multi-skill Chinese Course for Beginning and Intermediate Students. These two volumes form a series, even though we have not followed the usual order of publishing the lower-level textbook before the upper-level one.
Thousands of TV series are aired in China every year, but the vast majority of them are lengthy dramas with dozens of episodes. TV series of independent mini-plays are rare. So far we have only discovered two such series, Folks Like You and Me 咱老百姓 and Stories Amid Ourselves 身边的故事. The upper-level volume of our series consists of plays selected from Folks Like You and Me …
Stories Amid Ourselves is a series of mini-plays shown on Beijing Television. Over three hundred plays have been presented, from which we have selected twenty for this present volume. These twenty mini-plays, each lasting about five minutes duration, exhibit different scenarios in the metropolitan life in of Beijng. The characters include white-collar office workers, street peddlers, odd-jobbers from other parts of China, and tourists from foreign countries. Among them some are old and some are young, one is even blind. The plays feature a wide variety of characters whose lives are diverse and colourful and whose stories are vivacious and intriguing.
The plays collected here present vivid and up-to-date spoken Chinese. Since each mini-play conveniently functions as a unit, this volume can be used either as a principal or a supplementary textbook. Each unit includes the text, vocabulary, grammar notes, and exercises, which lay particular emphasis on listening and speaking. The book targets the beginning and intermediate students, and the instructors are encouraged to make adjustments of the pace according to the students’ proficiency levels.
