From the editors
Thank you for supporting Interactive Chinese and following us throughout 16 issues of elementary to intermediate level Chinese learning. For the following three issues (17, 18 and 19), we collaborated with National Taiwan Normal University to bring you a set of Chinese learning materials based on one of Ang Lee's classics: Eat Drink Man Woman. We hope that this film-based approach along with the authentic dialogue and practical, everyday vocabulary will provide learners with a more interesting way to learn not only the Chinese language, but acquire a deeper understanding of Chinese culture. The accompanying interactive CD-ROM makes it possible for learners to plan their own learning schedules and make the learning of advanced Chinese an easy and efficient process. Eat Drink Man Woman is a 1994 movie by the famous Chinese director Ang Lee, portraying the life of the head chef at the Grand Hotel. This movie allows viewers a glimpse into life in Taiwan through aspects such as food and ethnicity, and special attention is paid to the differences between traditional and modern culture. One of the special features of this movie is that it gathers together the different aspects of culture found in Chinese societies. Within the movie, you can hear many different accents, see the different groups that Chinese people form, and observe the different ways in which people carry out romantic relationships. This rich look into Chinese culture is one of the reasons that this movie was chosen to be part of the Cannes Film Festival that year. In order to provide readers with an easier learning process, we have included Pinyin for easier reading, as well as both Simplified and Traditional Chinese characters to meet the needs of all students. Each page also includes the English translation of the movie with vocabulary definitions and example sentences for grammatical structures. After every unit, there is an article about Chinese culture with topics ranging from transportation to food, religion, and school life in order to help build a better understanding of Chinese culture. Learning Chinese from movies can help learners understand the context in which Chinese is used. This will undoubtedly improve the effects of learning and increase motivation. Regardless of your final goals in studying Chinese, we hope this volume will help you to improve your Chinese language ability and cultural knowledge.
Preface
As learning Chinese becomes a global trend, the demand for Chinese teaching materials has also risen. Apart from the usual text-based teaching materials, audio-visual media such as TV and radio broadcasts are also great resources—of which the movie medium may be the best of all. While lasting a mere two hours in duration on average, movies contain the condensed essence of a culture through dialogue and content, making them ideal for more advanced learners. International recognition of Chinese movies in recent years has provided the perfect opportunity for Chinese film to be incorporated into the classroom. With good film choices and proper presentation of content, teaching material based on the language of films can be made. Our CD-ROM is based on Eat Drink Man Woman, a Chinese movie by the famous director Ang Lee, whose works include Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon among many others. Like his other Chinese films, Eat Drink Man Woman is filled with elements of Chinese culture and its conflicts. In this film, the Chinese food culture is discussed, acting as a window for foreigners to see into modern Chinese society. Set in Taipei, each scene depicts an aspect of Chinese culture and the lifestyles and interactions that can be seen, while the use of slang interspersed throughout makes this film perfect for upper-intermediate learners. In this CD-ROM, there are many functions included for language learning apart from the actual film and subtitles such as sentence repetition, slow playback, role-play, vocabulary and sentence patterns, language tests, and cultural notes, allowing for repeated viewing to aid with the learning of listening and speaking skills. This CD-ROM is suitable for self-study for learners of Chinese as a foreign language. For teachers of Chinese, the CD-ROM can be used as supplementary material, or as part of cultural or movie classes. We very much look forward to the variety of lessons that may be inspired by the contents of this disc. ….
