The Palace Museum’s Chinese paintings collection is based on the imperial collections of the Qing court and extensive acquisitions from donations and purchases. The collection from these sources comes to over 48,532 items.
Through the ages, the reason that the imperial court paid great attention to painting was their high regard for its use in propaganda and education as well as for its decorative function. Therefore they organized a great number of painters to create them.
The painting collection of the Palace museum has been attracting worldwide attention for several reasons. Firstly, its size is huge, with post-Song dynasty paintings especially noted for their comprehensiveness, many of which are little known by the outside world. Secondly, having been appraised by experts, the paintings can provide reliable evidence for academic research. Thirdly, their rich content includes a great number of new materials that could be explored and studied. They are not only essential for art historians, but also for experts of other subjects. As visual material for architecture, music, dance, aesthetics, folk customs, religion, even politics, economy, science and technology, they can never be replaced by texts. When research is deepened and expanded, its value and importance become ever more obvious.
In order to satisfy public demand, the Palace Museum has published quite number of painting catalogues. The largest-scale publication is the seventeen volumes in the sixty-volume set of the Complete Collection of the Treasures of the Palace Museum, which contain over two thousand paintings. Now the museum has determined to publish Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum, among which one hundred volumes will be for painting …
